Sample Holder (Kiel Cell) KC 2.0
The KC 2.0 sample holder is of fundamental importance for most experiments in solid-state ionics and other research. It was developed at the Chair of Sensors and Solid State Ionics at Kiel University and is based on numerous improvements to previous designs and many years of experience. The sample holder allows:
- the holding of samples of usual size and complete galvanic cells in a specified atmosphere that protects the experimental arrangement from chemical reactions or
specifies a defined gas partial pressure. A high-vacuum, gas-tight glass cylinder protects the arrangement from the ambient air. It is made of Duran glass for medium temperatures. In the case of quartz glass, 2 different versions are available depending on the requirements of avoiding oxygen diffusion through quartz at high temperatures. For most cases, choosing a single quartz tube is sufficient. For more sensitive applications, the double-walled quartz cylinder should be chosen, where the gas flows through the space between the two tubes to flush away the oxygen that has diffused through the outer tube.
6 high-vacuum gas-tight electrical BNC feedthroughs are installed. This allows several samples and galvanic cells to be measured at the same time.
The samples and galvanic cells can be charged by springs in the cold zone of the arrangement using an externally adjustable pressure.
- to accommodate a tube, for example a ZrO tube that is closed on one side and conducts oxygen ions, in order to create two separate gas spaces (inside and outside the tube).
In this case, 6 high-vacuum gas-tight BNC bushings are available on the outside of the pipe.
High-vacuum, gas-tight Swagelock quick-release fasteners are installed for the gas inlet and outlet.
The sample holder KC 2.0 can be used in any position, e.g. vertical or horizontal. It can be inserted into a tube furnace for temperature-dependent measurements with any of the glass cylinders. A suitable oven is available from Ionic Systems (TF 2.0).
